Thank you coal – and have you hugged a coal miner, or rig hand, if you are warm today?

Today, with less than 1% of vehicles being EVs in Texas and Oklahoma, power users are being asked to turn their thermostats down to 60 F and we haven’t even seen the coldest weather yet.

Great insight from David Ramsden Wood, or has his friends call him, DRW. Subscribe to his podcast at #hottakeoftheday

Fun facts! 20 mmbo/d of crude oil are used in the United States each day. 70% of that is used in transportation, and about 50% of that in passenger vehicles. To move to 15% EVs (40 mm total vehicles), would replace 1 mmbo/d of crude oil demand with electricity demand.

Today, with less than 1% of vehicles being EVs in Texas and Oklahoma, power users are being asked to turn their thermostats down to 60 F and we haven’t even seen the coldest weather yet. The result, rolling blackouts. The cause- wind power investment isn’t working today. The turbines are frozen. The wind isn’t blowing.

In California, due to poor forest management and an ever expanding human habitat, during the heat of summer, blackouts occur to prevent forest fires. And all the while – more data is consuming more energy running more servers for the cloud. You want to reduce emissions, take less pictures!

Fun other facts. 8% of CO2 emissions are from cement. 14.5% are from livestock for meat production. And the costs to prevent the temperature increasing 2 F by 2080 are trillions and trillions- based on a model (hope it’s not out of Imperial College Covid modeling school).

So today… let’s thank one of the sources of energy keeping the heat on today. Coal. I love you. Thank you.
