Maersk Tankers brings technical ops in-house as ammonia fleet takes shape

Denmark’s Maersk Tankers is set to establish in-house technical management operations as it prepares to take delivery of very large ammonia carriers (VLACs) and seeks tighter alignment between technical expertise and commercial ambitions.

The move marks a pivot from the company’s 2021 decision to hand over technical management of its tanker fleet to Synergy Group. That transfer included more than 80 vessels and the majority of the 3,300 staff, allowing Maersk Tankers to focus exclusively on commercial operations.

The latest step follows the Danish operator’s growing engagement in the gas carrier segment and its investment in 10 VLACs with ammonia dual-fuel options.

“Providing in-house technical management is critical to deliver the service our customers require for new technologies such as dual-fuel ammonia,” said Tina Revsbech, CEO, Maersk Tankers. “As we engage further in the gas carrier segment, we require a setup that brings technical expertise closer to our commercial business – and at scale.”

The transition is expected to be completed during 2026, with a focus on building a technical setup that supports both VLACs and tankers.

“We are grateful to Synergy Group for the strong partnership and welcome the possibility of working together again where it aligns with our mutual priorities,” Revsbech added.

Overseeing the transition will be Tommy Thomassen, chief operating officer at Maersk Offshore Wind and former chief technical officer at Maersk Tankers. Thomassen will guide the planning of a future-fit technical setup at Maersk Tankers, while continuing his responsibilities at Maersk Offshore Wind.
