SBM Offshore to install BP’s Gulf of America production unit

ENB Pub Note: BP’s offshore production in the Gulf of America is significant, with the company operating several major platforms and aiming to increase output. As of the latest available data:

  • Current Production: BP operates five production platforms in the Gulf of America—Argos, Atlantis, Mad Dog, Na Kika, and Thunder Horse. These platforms collectively produced around 300,000 barrels of oil equivalent per day (boe/d) in 2023.
  • Argos Platform: The Argos platform, which started production in 2023, has a gross production capacity of up to 140,000 barrels of oil per day. It is expected to increase BP’s gross operated production capacity in the Gulf by about 20%.
  • Atlantis Platform: Operating in over 7,000 feet of water, Atlantis has a production capacity of approximately 200,000 barrels of oil and 180 million cubic feet of gas per day.
  • Thunder Horse Platform: This platform, in more than 6,000 feet of water, has the capacity to handle 250,000 barrels of oil and 200 million cubic feet of natural gas per day.
  • Production Goals: BP aims to grow its Gulf of Mexico production to around 400,000 boe/d by the mid-2020s and maintain an average of 350,000 boe/d across the decade. By 2030, BP expects to reach over 400,000 boe/d, contributing to its global upstream production target of 2.3–2.5 million boe/d. Around 1 million boe/d is expected from U.S. onshore and offshore regions combined by 2030.
Total Estimate: While exact daily production varies, BP’s current offshore output in the Gulf of America is approximately 300,000–350,000 boe/d, with specific platforms like Argos and Atlantis contributing significantly. The company’s investments, including the Kaskida project (expected to produce 80,000 barrels of crude oil per day starting in 2029), indicate a trajectory toward the 400,000 boe/d target by the end of the decade.
These figures are based on BP’s operated platforms and do not include non-operated hubs where BP holds interests (e.g., Great White, Mars, Olympus, and Ursa).

Dutch floater expert SBM Offshore has signed a contract with UK-based supermajor BP for the wet tow and installation of the Kaskida semi-submersible floating production unit (FPU).

The Kaskida field is a greenfield Paleogene development located approximately 400 km southwest of New Orleans in the Keathley Canyon area of the US Gulf of Mexico.

The contract builds on SBM Offshore’s competence in deepwater moorings and installation. The company has installed more than 150 floating systems worldwide, including 45 FPSOs in deepwater.

Singapore’s Seatrium has been put in charge of engineering, procurement, construction, and onshore commissioning work for the Kaskida FPU.

Comprising a single topside module supported by a four-column semi-submersible hull, the Kaskida FPU is supported by subsea production wells located in a water depth of approximately 1,800 m. The unit can produce 80,000 barrels of crude oil per day from six wells in the first phase of development.

Enbridge will construct, own, and operate crude oil and natural gas pipelines for the project. The pipeline, named the Canyon Oil Pipeline System, will be a combination of 24″ and 26″ pipe with a capacity of 200,000 barrels per day.
