Equinor, Polenergia get construction permits for offshore wind farms in Poland

Norwegian energy major Equinor and its partner Polenergia have received construction permits for both the offshore and onshore parts of the Bałtyk 2 and Bałtyk 3 offshore wind farms in Poland.

The Bałtyk offshore wind farms are one of the largest infrastructure projects in the country’s history. The Bałtyk 2 and 3 will be able to supply power to more than 2m households with their total capacity of 1.44GW. They will be located in the Polish exclusive economic zone in the Baltic Sea between 22 and 37 km from the coastline.

The companies were given a total of 17 building permits which include clearing the construction of 100 offshore wind turbines with internal power and telecommunications networks, two offshore substations, export subsea cables, two onshore substations, 400 kV onshore cable lines, 220 kV onshore cable lines, and an access road to the onshore substations.

The preparatory works on land will begin this year and the first electricity from both wind farms is expected to flow in 2027, with the projects’ commercial operation scheduled for 2028.

“The construction of the Baltic offshore wind farms is of key importance for Poland’s energy security. Their commissioning will introduce Polenergia to the largest producers of energy from renewable energy sources in Central Europe,” said Jerzy Zan, president of the management board of Polenergia.

In the next phase of offshore wind development in Poland, Polenergia and Equinor are developing the Bałtyk 1 project with a capacity of up to 1.56GW located around 81 km from shore.
