Ørsted invests in battery storage with Hornsea 3 wind farm

Ørsted

Energy company Ørsted has announced its investment in a battery energy storage system to enhance stability in the UK energy market.

The system, co-located with Ørsted’s Hornsea 3 Offshore Wind Farm in Swardeston, Norfolk, will provide support to the grid, helping to balance supply and demand.

The battery, developed in collaboration with Tesla, boasts a capacity of 600MWh and a power rating of 300MW, equivalent to powering 80,000 UK homes daily.

Scheduled for completion by the end of 2026, it will be one of Europe’s largest battery energy storage systems.

Duncan Clark, Head of Ørsted UK & Ireland, said: “Our 12 existing UK offshore wind farms are providing a huge amount of clean energy to the grid.

“The battery will help ensure that renewable energy is used in the best possible way by storing it when demand is lower and then releasing it back into the system when it’s really needed.”
