ERCOT is forecasting that peak demand will exceed that mark each day from August 20 through August 24, potentially topping it by nearly 1 GW later in the period.
Temperatures are still projected to reach as high as 99°F in Houston and 105°F in Dallas, with heat indexes near 110°F, driving heavy air-conditioning load while wind generation is expected to remain subdued.
Yesterday’s Actual Numbers (August 18, 2026)
According to ERCOT’s Actual Loads of Forecast Zones data (last updated August 18 at 18:20 CT), system demand climbed steadily through the afternoon and reached a preliminary daily high of 89,579.92 MW (approximately 89.58 GW) in the hour ending 18:00 (6:00 p.m. CT). Key hourly totals included: HE 15:00 – 88,535.83 MW
HE 16:00 – 88,952.86 MW
HE 17:00 – 89,450.13 MW
HE 18:00 – 89,579.92 MW
This fell short of the all-time record (91.089 GW set July 22, 2026) and the previous August high of 87.016 GW (August 4).
Real-time snapshots earlier in the afternoon showed demand in the high 88,000–89,000 MW range with total system capacity near 113,000–114,000 MW (excluding ancillary services).
Wind output remained low during peak solar hours (around 6,700 MW in mid-afternoon readings), while solar (PVGR) contributed strongly at approximately 33,000–33,200 MW. Operating reserves stayed healthy under normal grid conditions, with no Energy Emergency Alerts or conservation appeals issued. Frequency remained stable near 60 Hz.
A minor generation loss of 656 MW occurred early in the morning (around 5:57 a.m.), but the system recovered without issue.
The grid handled the elevated load without disruption, consistent with its performance through earlier record-setting days this summer.
When ERCOT Predicts the Next Potential Peak
ERCOT’s latest public forecast (reported August 18) continues to point to August 20–24 as the window for potential new all-time peaks, with demand expected to exceed 91.089 GW daily and possibly approach or surpass 92 GW later in that stretch. For today (August 19), third-party real-time monitors based on ERCOT data are projecting a peak near 90.7 GW in the late afternoon/early evening (around 5:57 p.m. CT). This would be higher than yesterday’s preliminary high but still below the July record. Heat is expected to remain intense, and wind is forecast to stay relatively weak, so the evening solar ramp-down will again be a key watch period.
Natural gas generation is expected to ramp significantly if wind remains soft, with batteries also likely to discharge heavily after sunset—patterns that have supported the grid through prior high-demand evenings this year.
Operators will continue monitoring weather, renewable output, and large-load behavior closely. The combination of strong solar capacity, battery storage, and flexible thermal resources has so far provided solid buffers even during record conditions.
