As of mid-October 2026, U.S. drilling activity continues to firm. Baker Hughes reported its closely watched weekly rotary rig count at 603 for the week ending October 9 (up 5 week-over-week and up 56 year-over-year from 547). WellDatabase’s U.S. Rig Report dated 10.14.2026 showed 608 total rigs (up 6 week-over-week and up 52 year-over-year). Enverus’ daily GPS-tracked Daily Rig Count stood near 658 as of October 9 (roughly +2% from the prior week), consistent with its broader capture of the active fleet.
These three sources use different methodologies. Baker Hughes provides the traditional weekly rotary census (land, inland water, and offshore) that markets follow most closely. WellDatabase cross-references Baker Hughes data with permit records for granular operator, state, basin, well-type, wellbore, and depth breakdowns. Enverus tracks a higher share of the fleet in near real time via GPS, which almost always produces a higher headline number. Together they paint a consistent picture of modest weekly gains on an elevated year-over-year base, led by oil-directed activity.

Oil vs. Natural Gas Counts
Oil-directed drilling is driving the gains across sources:
- Baker Hughes: 462 oil rigs (+6 week-over-week), 132 gas rigs (−1), and 9 miscellaneous (unchanged). Oil accounts for roughly 77% of the total.
- WellDatabase: 435 oil rigs (+6 week-over-week, +43 from 392 a year earlier), 128 gas rigs (−1, +8 from 120), plus undisclosed (36), thermal (8), and unknown (1).
- Enverus: Public snapshots do not break out oil/gas as cleanly on the free Daily Rig Count page, but the higher overall total reflects broad strength, particularly in oil-weighted basins.
Gas activity is more mixed week-to-week but remains higher year-over-year, supported by Haynesville growth. We prefer the granular data from WellDatabase and highly recommend a subscription.
State-Level Comparison
Major producing states show close alignment between Baker Hughes and WellDatabase, with small differences attributable to timing, classification, and coverage:
Texas, New Mexico, Oklahoma, and Louisiana account for the bulk of activity and the weekly net gains. North Dakota is the clearest outlier, with WellDatabase running higher than Baker Hughes’ Williston/state figures—a recurring pattern tied to classification and coverage differences rather than a fundamental disconnect.
Basin Performance
The Permian Basin remains the clear leader:
- Baker Hughes / WellDatabase: 274 rigs (+4 week-over-week, +24 year-over-year from ~250).
- Enverus public basin snapshots have shown Permian activity in the ~249–252 range on daily reads around the same period.
Other key basins (WellDatabase / Baker Hughes alignments):
- Haynesville: 57 (+1, +16 YoY from 41) — key gas growth area.
- Eagle Ford: 49 (flat, +5 YoY).
- Williston: WellDatabase 40 (+1); Baker Hughes 35 (flat).
- Marcellus: 23 (flat both sources).
- Granite Wash: 20 (flat, +7 YoY).
- Cana Woodford: 19 (−1).
- Other: 102 (+1) on WellDatabase.
Horizontal drilling dominates (WellDatabase: 516 horizontal, +3; Baker Hughes also showed horizontal gains). Vertical and directional wells remain a smaller share but contributed modestly to the weekly increase on the WellDatabase tape.
Top operators on the WellDatabase report include Unknown (33), Continental Resources (28, +2), Pioneer Natural Resources (20), Diamondback Energy (19, +4), EOG Resources (17), and Permian Resources Operating LLC (16, +9).

Methodological Differences and What They Mean
The spread is expected and useful:
- Baker Hughes remains the market benchmark (Friday weekly census focused on significant oilfield-service users).
- WellDatabase adds operator-level and categorical granularity while staying relatively close to Baker Hughes totals.
- Enverus’ higher GPS-tracked figure (~658 vs. the low-600s) captures a broader working fleet, including more private-operator activity and near-real-time movements. Private operators have been a major driver of recent fleet growth according to Enverus Intelligence Research commentary.
Directional agreement is strong: oil-led gains, Permian leadership, Haynesville support for gas, and year-over-year increases in the 50+ rig range. Small weekly or basin-level divergences (especially Williston/North Dakota) are best read as methodological rather than contradictory signals.
Implications
Higher rig counts on an elevated year-over-year base support continued U.S. production strength, particularly oil from the Permian. This helps explain resilient domestic supply even as inventories remain relatively tight in key products. For investors, the Permian and private-operator activity remain the clearest growth areas. For the broader market, the multi-source confirmation that rigs are up reinforces a constructive near-term upstream picture.
