WASHINGTON (TNND) — The United States and Kazakhstan reached a $4.2 billion locomotive agreement on Monday that will support thousands of U.S. jobs in Texas and Pennsylvania.
Parts maker Wabtec, based in Pennsylvania, will provide the country’s national railway company, Kazakhstan Temir Zholy (KTZ), with 300 “evolution Series ES44Aci heavy-haul locomotive kits over the next decade,” according to the Department of Commerce.
President Donald Trump announced the agreement after a call with Kazakh President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev.
“They have signed the largest Railroad Equipment Purchase in History, $4 Billion Worth of United States Locomotives and Rail Equipment,” Trump wrote on Truth Social. “We need to support our U.S. Rail Industry, which has been attacked by Fake Environmentalists for years. Congratulations to President Tokayev on his great purchase. This Country, and the World, was built on reliable, beautiful Railroads. Now they will be coming back, FAST!”
Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick called it the “largest locomotive agreement in history” that will “deliver strong support for one of our most significant industries.”
“This is President Trump’s America First trade policy in action: landmark exports, new markets, & U.S. workers winning big!” Lutnick said on X.
Kazakhstan was hit with a 25% tariff rate by Trump in August.
President Tokayev told Trump in a July letter that he was ready for constructive dialogue “aimed at seeking a balanced solution to trade issues.”
