India slow in adopting new mining technologies: Coal ministry official

Speaking at a webinar organised by industry body PHD Chamber of Commerce and Industries, he said India is slow to adopt newer technologies as compared to other countries.

New Delhi: The benefits of Artificial Intelligence and Internet of Things are enormous for the mining industry which is still using legacy practices and technologies, coal ministry’s additional secretary M Nagaraju said today.

Speaking at a webinar organised by industry body PHD Chamber of Commerce and Industries, he said India is slow to adopt newer technologies as compared to other countries and there is a need for the industry to focus and invest in the technologies, and have collaboration between research bodies and industry.

“We need to invest in research and applications of AI and IoT for mining as these technologies will be cost-saving leading to more profits; high levels of productivity, improved quality and bring efficiency in the system,” Nagaraju said.

The event was attended by Ravi Prakash, Senior Principal and Head of AI/ML and Engineering Data Analytics; and Madhu Bharadwaj, Lead Consultant, Advanced Engineering Group, Infosys Limited.

During the webinar, Alok Porwal, Professor and Head, CSRE, IIT Bombay gave a presentation on AI in Mineral Sector where he deliberated about the challenges and opportunities in the sector.

The industry leaders who attended the event included Anil K Chaudhary, Chairman and Naveen Jindal, Co-Chairman of the Minerals & Metals Committee of PHD Chamber.
