Oil prices climbed more than 2% in Monday trading after the United States and Iran exchanged strikes for the first time in weeks and Iran reported a supertanker striking sea mines in the Strait of Hormuz. The developments ended a period of relative calm in the six-month conflict and immediately revived supply-risk fears for a waterway that normally carries about 20% of the world’s seaborne oil.
Brent crude futures gained $2.11, or 2.40%, to $90.20 a barrel. U.S. West Texas Intermediate crude rose $1.89, or 2.27%, to $85.30 a barrel. The move began in premarket hours as traders digested Sunday’s U.S. action and Monday’s tanker report.
U.S. Strikes on Larak Island
On Sunday, August 30, U.S. forces struck two Iranian rocket launchers on Larak Island in the Strait of Hormuz. U.S. Central Command spokesman Capt. Tim Hawkins said Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps forces had been observed preparing to launch rockets carrying sea mines into the strait. The operation was described as a “limited, precise action” against minelaying forces posing an imminent threat. It was the first known U.S. strike on Iranian territory since late July.
Iranian media reported explosions near the island. The IRGC said the attack killed and wounded several fighters and civilians; semi-official Tasnim News Agency specified two killed and two wounded. Tehran vowed “response and punishment.” Iran subsequently launched missiles and drones at two U.S. air bases in Jordan. Jordan said it intercepted eight incoming missiles.
No independent, detailed bomb damage assessment has been released. U.S. officials characterized the strike as successful and limited. Iranian statements confirmed casualties but provided no imagery or technical evaluation of launcher destruction. Satellite or open-source visual analysis of the specific Sunday hits is not yet publicly available given how recent the event is.
The strike followed last week’s U.S. announcement that internationally recognized shipping lanes in the strait had been cleared of Iranian sea mines after months of operations involving Navy divers, special forces, and air assets. President Trump had warned that any new mine-laying vessels would be destroyed.

Tanker Struck by Mines
On Monday, Iran’s IRGC Navy said a supertanker attempting to transit an “illegal route south of the Strait of Hormuz” struck two sea mines, caught fire, and came to a complete stop. The statement, carried by state media, did not identify the vessel or its crew and gave no casualty figures. The IRGC warned that ships violating its security regulations would face the same fate and that compliance with its passage rules is mandatory.
The incident occurred days after the United States declared the main shipping lanes cleared. It also followed earlier tanker attacks last week, including a vessel hit by an unknown projectile on August 29 near Khasab, Oman, and two others struck on August 24 and 25. Traffic through the strait remains far below normal levels.
No independent damage assessment of the mined tanker has been published. The IRGC account is the primary source; commercial satellite or maritime tracking confirmation of the vessel’s identity, exact location, or extent of fire and structural damage is not yet in public reporting.
Why Oil Is Moving Higher
The combination of a U.S. strike on Iranian soil and a confirmed mine strike on a tanker revived the geopolitical risk premium. The Strait of Hormuz remains the world’s most important oil chokepoint. Even with some recovery in Gulf exports (Goldman Sachs recently estimated 15–16 million barrels per day, still 7–8 million bpd below pre-war levels), any new disruption quickly tightens the market.
Traders also noted President Trump’s social-media post claiming Iran’s Kharg Island oil terminal was “being blown to smithereens,” though U.S. military sources did not confirm an attack on the facility that handles most of Iran’s crude exports. The post added to uncertainty.
What Analysts Are Predicting
JPMorgan estimates that each additional month of disruption could add $7–$8 a barrel to Brent prices. If the disruption lasts three months, the bank sees average monthly Brent around $114 a barrel.
Goldman Sachs has warned Brent could reach $120 a barrel if shipping problems through Hormuz persist. Its base case assumes tensions eventually ease, with Brent averaging $80 a barrel in the fourth quarter and $75 next year, but the bank says risks remain skewed to the upside if Hormuz or Red Sea disruptions last longer than expected.
Other houses have similar ranges: prolonged disruption scenarios from ING and others point to $105–$120, while base cases cluster in the $80–$90 range if a diplomatic off-ramp appears. The market is pricing a higher probability that the latest exchange will not be a one-off.
The weekend events underscore that mine threats and limited strikes can still move prices even after months of conflict. Detailed battle-damage assessments and independent verification of the tanker incident will determine whether the premium holds or fades in coming sessions.
